words by Eamon Whalen
Yesterday evening, a highly anticipated rap album from Chicago was released in a year full of highly anticipated Chicago rap albums. This one was from Noname, a wordsmith best known for her guest appearances on songs by her old open mic friends Chance The Rapper and Mick Jenkins. Noname has been teasing the understated, personal diary-like Telefone for a few years now. When she spoke to Greenroom in 2014, she described her inspiration behind the title's project.
I named it Telefone because I like the idea of what it means to be on the phone with someone for the very first time and all its little intricate idiosyncrasies. From the awkwardness to the laughter or various intimate conversations you can have over the phone, I want my project to be very conversational. I want people to feel like they’re on the phone with me, getting to know me better than a text message or a tweet.
Stream the 10 track project below, featuring guest appearances from Raury, Smino, Saba, Eryn Allen Kane, Ravyn Lenae, Xavier Omar and theMIND. You can catch Noname in Minneapolis opening up for D.R.A.M at Greenroom's Red Bull Sound Select Show on August 20th.
