words by Evan Winter
If any artist from the state were to take on the admittedly risky task of remixing "Minnesota" – probably the Lil Yachty-est of all Lil Yachty tracks – it makes sense that it would be Allan Kingdom. The St. Paul-raised rapper's eclectic sound and whole-hearted self-confidence has made him instrumental in bolstering the state's reputation as a hub of hip hop prowess. From generating national buzz with St. Paul rap-R&B quartet thestand4rd, to his feature on Kanye West's "All Day," Kingdom has undoubtedly been a force in contemporary Minnesota music.
Chock-full of references to the Land of 10,000 Lakes – including a nod to the late Prince himself ("Purple rain on me"), Kingdom puts on for his state in a major way: "I been all around the globe, yeah / But I stay in Minnesota." The beat, co-produced by Dro, gets a rework too; heavier bass and layered croons from Kingdom send the original version's instantly-recognizable piano to the background.
In the track's description, Kingdom also reveals that a new album is on the way. Check out the remix below.
