For a couple years now, the producer Mejiwahn has raved to me about the talent of the Richmond, Virginia musician Devonne Harris, better known as DJ Harrison (Questlove is already a fan). A DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist following in the sonic footsteps of another Richmond native you might've heard of -- D'Angelo -- Harrison is prolific. His Bandcamp catalog is sprawling, with over twenty projects and several full length albums with his band Butcher Brown (members of Butcher Brown played on Kendrick Lamar's song "i.")
Yesterday, the label Stones Throw announced that they're working with Harrison to release new music in 2017. The announcement was accompanied by a short video for Harrison's song "Rule The World," a sunny groove with fuzzy-around-the-edges low-fi quality that's characteristic of much of Harrison's previous cassette-driven work.
To hear it from DJ Harrison himself, check out this 2015 interview he did with our friends at Passion of the Weiss.
